A mudança de paradigmas dentro da ciência fez surgir, na saúde mental, a reforma do pensamento reducionista da psiquiatria tradicional. A reforma psiquiátrica propõe a árdua tarefa de mudar o foco das ações e serviços em saúde da doença para a sujeito. Após dezessete anos da reformulação da Política Nacional de Saúde Mental brasileira, ainda não foi possível concretizar a atenção integral dos sujeitos em sofrimento psíquico. Quando o assunto é a maternidade de mulheres em sofrimento psíquico, parece que ainda caminhamos a passos lentos. Desta forma, este estudo teve por objetivo analisar a produção literária nacional e internacional acerca da experiência da maternidade de mulheres em sofrimento psíquico. Para tal, foi realizada a revisão da literatura existente com os descritores 'saúde mental' e 'maternidade' correlacionados nos bancos de dados da Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS). Tendo em vista a restrição de títulos em língua portuguesa, buscou-se nos bancos de dados internacionais associados à plataforma produções com base no descritor 'mental health' correlacionado com descritores 'mothering' e 'parenting'. A análise das produções encontradas evidenciou a escassez de pesquisas que dialoguem acerca das vivências da maternidade de mulheres em sofrimento psíquico. Tal achado corrobora a percepção da realidade atual brasileira: a assistência integral da mulher em sofrimento psíquico está longe de ser efetivada. O reconhecimento dessa vivência é condição necessária para a execução dos serviços de saúde mental em consonância com os princípios de equidade e integralidade preconizados pelo Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). Assim, torna-se fundamental que os serviços de saúde contemplem essas mulheres para além do lugar de portadoras de uma doença.
