Transsphenoidal pseudocapsule-based extracapsular resection for pituitary adenomas

Abstract: The transsphenoidal pseudocapsule-based extracapsular resection approach provides a more effective and safe alternative compared to the traditional intracapsular one because of its higher tumor removal and remission rates, and lower recurrence rate.

“…Their techniques increased the complete tumor removal and endocrinological remission rates and decreased the complication and recurrence rates. Qu et al [6] defined these techniques as pseudocapsulebased extracapsular resection approach. However, this technique is not always possible because whether the resection is performed outside or inside the pseudocapsule largely depends on the consistency of the tumor and the degree of development of the pseudocapsule.…”

“…There have been many reports describing surgical techniques using a pseudocapsule as a surgical dissection plane. In those reports, the dissection was performed along the interface between the outer surface of a pseudocapsule and a normal pituitary gland [3][4][5][6][7][8]. Their techniques increased the complete tumor removal and endocrinological remission rates and decreased the complication and recurrence rates.…”

“…Pituitary adenoma is the third most common primary intracranial tumor of the central nervous system (Nakamura et al, 2011;Ye et al, 2015), as well as the most common saddle area tumor (Qu et al, 2011). Pituitary adenomas are benign tumors, but some have shown the ability to invade areas outside of the central nervous system, such as the intracranial region, which can lead to serious health problems and even death (Trouillas et al, 2003;Norberg et al, 2012;Palumbo et al, 2013).…”

“…A limitation of this study is that recent conceptual changes in the approach to NFPA treatment have altered the internal decompression model of removing NFPAs (17,20). However, these new concepts also developed with advancements in endoscopic techniques.…”
