“…The rats can release LH if their ovaries are grafted into the spleen to reduce the oestrogen level in the general circulation (Flerko & Bardos, 1961) and as we saw they may ovulate reflexly if mating is not blocked. This last observation does not support the suggestion by Desclin, Flament-Durand & Gepts (1962) that the failure to ovulate rhythmically is due to insensitivity to environmental stimuli. On the other hand, most of these rats have very small ovaries, and their oestrogen secretion is probably reduced, and Bogdanove (1963) recently questioned whether the hypothalamic-pituitary response to normal levels of oestrogen was necessarily impaired by anterior lesions.…”

“…Such animal preparations have since been used to study the output of pituitary gonadotrophins (Lipschutz, 1946;Lipschutz et al, 1946 ;Heller and Jungck, 1947;Jungck et al, 1947;Li and Gardner, 1947;Lipschutz et al, 1948;v. I felt that spayed animals with intra-splenic ovarian grafts could be used to see whether oxytocin influences the output of prolactin or L.T.H.…”

“…without using von Euler's equations. ) It has been shown that hypophysial gonadotrophic activity is dependent on stimuli originating in the hypothalamus : (1) Transplantation of the pituitary to sites other than the sella turcica stops any detectable gonadotrophin secretion in the female rat, while retransfer of the transplant to its original site enables re-establish¬ ment of gonadotrophin secretion (Everett & Nikitovitch-Winer, 1963); (2) lesions placed in various parts of the hypothalamus disturb hypophysial gonadotrophic activity (Desclin, Flament-Durand & Gepts, 1962 ;Flerkó, 1963) ; (3) drugs affecting the central nervous system postpone or prevent implantation (depending on experi¬ mental procedure) if injected before hypothalamic stimulation of gonadotrophin secretion on L2 (Psychoyos, 1963). Adrenergic blocking agents will prevent ovulation only if injected before the stimulation of gonadotrophin (GTH) secretion at prooestrus (Everett, 1961).…”
