Transplantation of Killer Endosymbionts in Paramecium

Abstract: The mass spectra in both instances were nearly identical to that reported for trans-~-farnesene•. Synthesis and mass spectroscopy of trans-~-farnesene revealed that this compound and the aphid odour were identical. Bioassay of trans-~farnesene was carried out by crushing a sealed glass ampoule containing approximately 10 mg of synthetic trans-~-farnesene in the presence of M. persicae on turnip leaves. A large number responded by falling or walking from the plant.Combined with insecticidal sprays for the contr… Show more

“…Gibson (37) also has made the remarkable observation that when mu-bearing 138 (syngen 8) paramecia are injected with lambda-bearing cytoplasm from 299 (syngen 8), both endosymbionts disappear. Also surprising are three cases where only the injected endosymbionts persisted, the originals disappearing: paramecia bearing 138 mu (syngen 8) injected with cytoplasm containing 7 kappa (syngen 2), stock 299 lambda bearers (syngen 8) injected with cytoplasm containing 7 kappa, and stock 299 lambda bearers injected with cytoplasm containing Al kappa.…”

“…However, many important questions remain to be clarified. For example, it is not known how obligate symbiosis is established in the first place or how sensitive strains can pick up Caedibacter and become killers, nor how killer Paramecium strains are protected from their own specific R-body producing endosymbionts (Gibson 1973; Preer et al 1974). …”
