“…It is well recognized that naphthalene haemolytic anaemia is by no means rare, particularly following the ingestion of mothballs by children, and that glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency predisposes to haemolysis (Dacie, 1967) Transplacental poisoning with haemolytic anaemia has been reported in a newborn infant whose mother sucked mothballs during the last trimester of pregnancy (Anziulewicz et al, 1959).…”

“…During pregnancy, reduced fetal birth weight and growth are more frequently observed on PAH exposure (Duarte-Salles et al 2013;Perera et al 2005;WHO 2010a, b). The developing fetus remains on cancer risk, due to susceptibility to DNA damage (Perera et al 2005) and hemolytic anemia after trans-placental transport exposure to PAHs (Zinkharn and Childs 1958;Anziulewicz et al 1959). In children, exposure to PAHs can induce oxidative stress (Svecova et al 2009;Li et al 2013;Kamal et al 2015), genotoxicity (EC and European Commission 2001; Gamboa et al 2008;Kim et al 2013), neurological dysfunction (Saunders et al 2002;Kim et al 2013), hepato-toxicity and hematological changes, including anemia IARC 1983;Kamal et al 2014a, b;Kim et al 2013 and reference therein).…”

“…Naphthalene can cross the placenta and is fetotoxic (79). In 21 newborns, a rather severe form of hemolytic anemia was produced by blankets stored in naphthalene (35).…”
