Transperitoneal laparoscopic heminephroureterectomy in the pediatric population: A single-centre experience using a sealing device

Abstract: Introduction: We sought to report the outcomes of transperitoneal laparoscopic heminephroureterectomy (LHNU) in pediatric population and to describe the technical details of this minimally invasive surgery. Methods: Seventeen pediatric patients (18 renal units), who had consecutive transperitoneal LHNU in our department between January 2012 and July 2017 were included in the study. In all patients, diagnostic cystoscopy and retrograde pyelography were carried out immediately before the operation. A catheter wa… Show more

“…While, if DRS is associated with VUR, ectopic ureter, ureterocele, ureteral obstruction, and symptoms occur (hydronephrosis, UTI, incontinence), a surgical treatment might be necessary. 4,[10][11][12] In 1993, Jordan and Winslow successfully carried out the first laparoscopic transperitoneal (TP) heminephrectomy in a 14-year-old child. 13 Thereafter, this approach, compared with open surgery, became very popular in pediatric urology, reporting less postoperative pain, shorter hospitalization time, better cosmetic effect, and faster return to full physical activity in the child.…”

“…In a series of 601 cases, Akin et al (7) laparoscopically made all kinds of urological operations including radical, reconstructive and continence surgeries. In complex renal calculi, Chao Qin et al (8)(9) had 75 Retroperitoneal laparoscopic cases and Aydoğdu and Silay had pediatric laparoscopic series. Today, urological laparoscopic surgery has become preferable over open surgery in almost all procedures today although the learning curve is long especially in reconstructive urology.…”
