This longitudinal study of forty-four families explored fathers' as compared to mothers' specific contribution to their children's attachment representation at ages 6, 10, and 16 years. In toddlerhood, fathers' and mothers' play sensitivity was evaluated with a new assessment, the sensitive and challenging interactive play scale (SCIP). Fathers' SCIP scores were predicted by fathers' caregiving quality during the first year, were highly consistent across 4 years, and were closely linked to the fathers' own internal working model of attachment. Qualities of attachment as assessed in the Strange Situation to both parents were antecedents for children's attachment security in the Separation Anxiety Test at age 6. Fathers' play sensitivity and infant-mother quality of attachment predicted children's internal working model of attachment at age 10, but not vice versa. Dimensions of adolescents' attachment representations were predicted by fathers' play sensitivity only. The results confirmed our main assumption that fathers' play sensitivity is a better predictor of the child's long-term attachment representation than the early infant-father security of attachment. The ecological validity of measuring fathers' sensitive and challenging interactive play behavior as compared to infant proximity seeking in times of distress is highlighted. Findings are discussed with respect to a wider view on attachment in that both parents shape their children's psychological security but each in his or her unique way.

Despite the growing research on emotion regulation, the empirical evidence for normative age-related emotion regulation patterns is rather divergent. From a life-span perspective, normative age changes in emotion regulation may be more salient applying the same methodological approach on a broad age range examining both growth and decline during development. In addition, emotion-specific developmental patterns might show differential developmental trends. The present study examined age differences in seven emotion regulation strategies from early adolescence (age 11) to middle adulthood (age 50) for the three emotions of sadness, fear, and anger. The results showed specific developmental changes in the use of emotion regulation strategies for each of the three emotions. In addition, results suggest age-specific increases and decreases in many emotion regulation strategies, with a general trend to increasing adaptive emotion regulation. Specifically, middle adolescence shows the smallest emotion regulation strategy repertoire. Gender differences appeared for most emotion regulation strategies. The findings suggest that the development of emotion regulation should be studied in an emotion-specific manner, as a perspective solely on general emotion regulation either under- or overestimates existing emotion-specific developmental changes.

The concept of organization in the service of adaptation has been applied to attachment theory (Sroufe & Waters, 1977) as well as to a variety of life sciences (Ryan, Kuhi & Deci, 1997). Internal working models (IWMs) are postulated as providing organizing structure to the attachment behavior system controlling attachment behaviors toward caregivers and, with increasing age, autonomous individual adaptation. While many theoretical specifications have been suggested on that topic (e.g. Bretherton, 1987, 1990; Bretherton & Munholland, 1999; Main, Kaplan & Cassidy, 1985; Sroufe & Fleeson, 1986), empirical studies focusing directly on the structure or functions of internal working models are rare. Knowledge about the structure and functioning of IWMs could add to the understanding of the developmental influences of the attachment organization across the life-span. In this paper two topics will be addressed shortly and related to an empirical investigation concerning the relationship between attachment representations during late adolescence and emotion regulation patterns: (1) structure and functions of IWMs in terms of information-processing and emotion and behavior regulation; and (2) the transfer from IWMs of self-with-attachment figures to adaptive personality structures based on autonomous self-regulation.
