Transoral Robotic Surgery for Atypical Carcinoid Tumor of the Larynx

Abstract: In recent years, transoral robotic surgery has been introduced as an efficient and a reliable method for excision of selected oral cavity, tongue base, and supraglottic tumors in otolaryngology. In this case report, a 39-year-old woman with a history of hoarseness and dysphagia for approximately 6 months is presented. The patient was diagnosed with atypical carcinoid tumor on the laryngeal aspect of the epiglottis, and excision of the tumor was performed through transoral robotic surgery using the robotic da V… Show more

“…The surgical procedures used included total and partial laryngectomy (7 cases were treated using CO 2 lasers; the others underwent robotic partial laryngectomy 48 ). As concluded by Woodruff and Senie (1991) 44 and Ferlito et al (2005, 2006), 42,45 surgery remains the mainstream treatment for atypical laryngeal carcinoid today.…”

“…Recently, transoral robotic partial laryngectomy has become possible. 48 The principal advantages of robotic partial laryngectomy (compared to the traditional open approaches) are preservation of laryngeal function and elimination of the need for permanent tracheostomy. 48 However, such surgery is expensive and few hospitals have the sophisticated equipment required.…”

“…[7] As most tumors are supraglottic in location, supraglottic laryngectomy is often performed. [8] The usual sites of metastatic involvement are lymph nodes, bones, skin, liver, and lung. Therefore, elective neck dissection is indicated.…”

“…Most TORS for laryngeal cancer has focused on supraglottic laryngectomy (SGL) . Multiple types of tumors have been resected using this method included SCC, nerve sheath tumors , paragangliomas and carcinoid tumors . The technique follows the principles of TLM and has been described in detail .…”
