Transoral management of localized carcinoma of the oral cavity using the CO2 laser

Abstract: Since 1972 we have been cautiously exploring the use of CO2 laser in the management of carefully selected cases of localized carcinoma of the oral cavity. At the present time our experience is based on the treatment of 57 patients with cancer of the oral cavity. The CO2 laser has been found to be an indispensable tool in the transoral management of T1 carcinomas, multiple superficial carcinoma, extensive leukoplakia and verrucous carcinoma. The laser allows precise excision of the lesion and involved mucosa an… Show more

“…The majority of the literature suggests that premalignant and malignant lesions (T 1 and select T 2 tumors) can be resected with laser via a transoral approach with acceptable local control rates [8]. Bone involvement is regarded as the only true contraindication for laser resection [9]. Compared to traditional modalities of treatment, laser has certain advantages like: improved visibility, hemostasis, decreased postoperative pain, and edema [2].…”

“…method of transoral C02 laser treatment of oral cavi¬ ty and oropharyngeal neoplasms was simi¬ lar to that reported by Strong et al" in 1979. The patients for this study were selected on the basis of transoral accessi¬ bility of the tumor or of the tissues to be removed.…”

“…They achieve results comparable to those of conventional surgery while providing minimal invasiveness [2][3][4][5][6], a great healing potential and less postoperative inflammation and swelling [7][8][9][10][11]. The concomitant coagulation of small blood vessels allows for a dry operating field and better visibility [12][13][14][15][16].…”
