Transmissivity directional hysteresis of a nonlinear metamaterial slab with very small linear permittivity

Abstract: We investigate propagation of a transverse magnetic field through a nonlinear metamaterial slab of sub-wavelength thickness and with a very small and negative linear dielectric permittivity. We prove that, for a given input intensity, the output intensity is a multi-valued function of the field incidence angle so that the transmissivity exhibits angular multi-stability and a pronounced directional hysteresis behavior. The predicted directional hysteresis is a consequence of the fact that the linear and nonline… Show more

“…Usually, large gain is expected for strong amplification, but the gain cannot be very large in practice. A special material of zero permittivity ε or permeability μ provides us some special properties [6][7][8][9][10]. Several interesting applications have been reported, such as directive radiation and spatial filtering [6][7][8], squeezing electromagnetic energy [9] and nonlinear optics [10].…”

“…While the preponderance of this work is still confined to the study of linear optical processes, these materials have also been predicted to exhibit enhanced harmonic generation [15][16][17][18] and optical instabilities [19,20]. In this new setting nonlinear processes may be triggered by photonic [15,16], plasmonic [18,20], and plasma resonances [17,18,20].…”
