Transmission of Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome in China and the Role of Climate Factors: A Review

Abstract: Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a rodent-borne disease that poses a serious public health threat in China. HFRS is caused by hantaviruses, mainly Seoul virus in urban areas and Hantaan virus in agricultural areas. Although preventive measures including vaccination programs and rodent control measures have resulted in a decline in cases in recent years, there has been an increase in incidence in some areas and new endemic areas have emerged. This review summarises the recent literature relating… Show more

“…HTNV was isolated for the first time in 1978 62 and was linked to the rodent Apodemus agrarius; the virus was detected in blood, urine, feces, and respiratory tract samples. In humans, this species causes a severe form of HFRS, which has thus far been restricted to rural areas of China, Korea, and Russia 63,64 .…”

“…Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, caused by Hantaviruses (family Bunyaviridae) is an acute interstitial nephropathy characterized by high fever and varying degrees of renal insufficiency and hemorrhage [ 1 ]. HFRS includes diseases such as Korean hemorrhagic fever, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, and nephropathia epidemica.…”

“…The genome of HTNV consists of L, M, and S segments, which encode the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, glycoprotein, and nucleoprotein, respectively (Cheng et al, 2014). HFRS is a severe, life-threatening illness characterized by fever, hemorrhage, and renal failure and is a serious public health threat in China (Hansen et al, 2015). A total of 136,012 cases were reported during 2005–2015 in mainland China, with a case-fatality rate as high as 10–15% (Zhang et al, 2010; Kang et al, 2012).…”
