Transmission of a Newly Characterized Strain of Varicella‐Zoster Virus from a Patient with Herpes Zoster in a Long‐Term‐Care Facility, West Virginia, 2004

Abstract: We investigated a small outbreak of varicella in a long-term-care facility after a case of herpes zoster. Clinical specimens and environmental samples were collected from all case patients and from surfaces in the case patients' rooms and other common-use areas. Wild-type varicella-zoster virus (VZV) DNA was identified in all 3 varicella case patients, and high concentrations of VZV DNA were detected in environmental samples from the room of the herpes zoster case patient. Genotypic analysis showed that the id… Show more

“…There were no unusual features in this clade 2 strain. The clade 5 sample (KY037797) contained the same vaccine-specific SNP at ORF62 position 107252 (reference sequence: Dumas strain, accession #NC001348) [7].…”

“…In subjects with herpes zoster, the horizontal transmission rate is 16% of susceptible contacts [284] . Transmission primarily arises from the exposed skin lesions of immunocompromised subjects or subjects with disseminated zoster, and is rare if the lesions are not exposed [16,17,[285][286][287][288][289] . The risk of fetal infection is virtually zero: Localised maternal zoster (the few published data estimate 0.15-2 cases of herpes/1000 pregnancies [90,147,290,291] ) does not seem to be associated with fetal or in utero infection, nor with post-natal infection because newborns are protected by passively transmitted maternal antibodies [56,90,145,147,166,173,191] .…”
