Transmission and Epidemiology of Zoonotic Protozoal Diseases of Companion Animals

Abstract: SUMMARYOver 77 million dogs and 93 million cats share our households in the United States. Multiple studies have demonstrated the importance of pets in their owners' physical and mental health. Given the large number of companion animals in the United States and the proximity and bond of these animals with their owners, understanding and preventing the diseases that these companions bring with them are of paramount importance. “…Also, various genera of coccidia have been detected in German pets: the prevalence of Cystoisospora being 5.6% and 6% for dog and cat populations, respectively [17]. Some parasites occurring in cats and dogs, both protozoa and helminths, are responsible for important zoonotic diseases, including welldocumented diseases such as echinococcosis, toxocarosis, ancylostomatidosis and trichuriasis, as well as emerging and re-emerging infections, such as cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis [6,8,28].…”

“…O ciclo biológico do Lutzomyia sp. se inicia com a deposição dos ovos em locais úmidos, ricos em matéria orgânica e de pouca luminosidade, não havendo fase evolutiva na água (1)(2)(3) . Nas Américas, as leishmanioses apresentam duas principais categorias clínicas, associadas a uma gama de sintomas e graus diferentes de severidade: Leishmaniose Visceral (LV) e a Leishmaniose Tegumentar Americana (LTA).…”

“…On the other hand, arthropod vectors brought into or attracted to the home by dogs may inadvertently bite humans sharing this space. The presence of companion animals within the home environment is a definitive risk factor for human infection with Trypanosoma cruzi and leishmaniosis, for example [74,75]. Veterinarians clearly have an important role in educating their clients about minimizing transmission risk.…”
