Transmigration of Mandibular Canines

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present the first case of unusual reverse oblique (110 degrees to midsagittal plane) migration of mandibular right canine crossing the jaw midline and piercing the lower border of the mandible at the level of the opposite canine and also to report two more cases of transmigrated mandibular canine and one case of transmigrating mandibular canine. Mandibular canines are “cornerstone” of dental arch; their importance is manifested by their efficiency in masticatory function, stabil… Show more

“…The most common approach was to extract the transmigrating tooth, 5,8 and then either to treat the malocclusion orthodontically or not to treat the patient, 19,29 considering the doubtful prognosis of TMC repositioning. 20,30 Indeed, orthodontic-surgical TMC repositioning is discussed in very few reports. 1,9,20 According to Wertz,31 when nonextraction orthodontic treatment is indicated, TMC surgical repositioning should be attempted.…”

“…20,30 Indeed, orthodontic-surgical TMC repositioning is discussed in very few reports. 1,9,20 According to Wertz,31 when nonextraction orthodontic treatment is indicated, TMC surgical repositioning should be attempted. In fact, TMC surgical repositioning followed by extrusion with light orthodontic forces to avoid ankylosis or external root resorption has the best long-term prognosis, as reported by Becker and Chaushu 32 in a long-term follow-up study.…”
