The relevance of the research problem is driven by the modern discourse in translation pedagogy. Our understanding of the network enables to find a new way in modelling translation process in the context of modern communications flow, professional groups, databases, interaction technologies for translation companies and clients, project managers and translators etc. The online model for teaching and learning translation is not limited to communication networks. Its main linking node is a social subject-the learner. Such social network's feature as a cell-based structure makes it possible to present theoretical and practical material in the form of modules that include challenges, solution options, necessary internal and external resources, learning activities and ways to check the achievements. The practical value is that the online model for teaching and learning translation will help the students to learn certain modular blocks of the translation model by using structured and unstructured communication channels.

To complete Catford's definition, Bassnett explains that translation as a process that involves the delivering of a source language (SL) text into the target language (TL) so as to ensure Irwan Irwan, Hendra Eka Putra, Rahmadani Rahmadani: An Error Analysis in Constructing WH-Questions -93 -that the surface meaning of the two languages will be approximately similar and the structures of the SL will be preserved as closely as possible but not so closely that the Target Language structures will be seriously distorted (Bassnett, 2013). This article was focused on analyzing students’ variation in translating English passive voice into Bahasa Indonesia. The data was taken from the final examination results of Translation I subject. There were 91 documents. Data were analyzed based on the theory of translation variation. There were 137 translation variations found after analyzing the students’ translation results. The variations of students’ translations were “(had) being banned” 8 translated variation, “was brought down in” 13 translated variation, “be sentenced” 7 translated variations, “(is) given by” 7 translated variations, “were convicted of” 7 translated variations, “were embroiled in” 5 translated variations, “was placed under” 7 translated variations, “is sponsored by” 4 translated variations, “(was) exposed by” 17 translated variations, “had been covered up by” 5 translated variations, “was banned from” 5 translated variations, “were excluded from” 5 translated variations, “have never been convicted of” 7 translated variations, “(was) banned for” 5 translated variations, “was not suspended” 11 translated variations, “have been banned for” 4 translated variations, “was charged over” 4 translated variations, “were investigated” 2 translated variations, “was caught up in” 4 translated variations. It can be concluded that the students’ translation skill especially in translating passive voice still have problem and it should be developed as well as possible.

Background With an increasing number of ethnic minority populations, the use of multiple languages in one research study has increased in recent years. The use of multiple languages helps increase comprehensiveness of educational materials and/or survey questionnaires, and promote ethnic minorities’ participation in research. However, little has been clearly known about practical issues in using multiple languages in one research study. Objectives The purpose of this paper is to explore practical issues in using multiple languages in a study among diverse sub-ethnic groups of Asian American breast cancer survivors in order to propose future directions for the use of multiple languages in research projects. Methods Throughout the research process, research team made written records of practical issues and possible reasons for the issues as they arose. Weekly group discussions among research team members were administered, and the written records of these discussions were reviewed and analyzed using the content analysis. The unit of analysis was individual words. The words in the data (memos and written records) were classified into idea categories that emerged from the coding process. Results The idea categories included issues in: (a) collaborators from various sub-ethnic groups; (b) IRB protocol submissions; (c) consistencies in translation process, (d) conceptual equivalence; (e) cultural differences; (f) existing translated versions; and (g) authorship issues. Based on the issues, we made the following suggestions for multi-lingual research: (a) networking and setting multiple communication channels with potential collaborators; (b) checking the institution’s IRB policies related to the use of multiple languages; (c) setting the rules and procedures for translation process; (d) checking existing different language versions of instruments; and (e) setting the rules for authorship in advance. Conclusions The suggestions made in this study would help the researchers be prepared in advance to deal with the challenges.
