Translation and Validation of the Coping with Death Scale: A Study with Nurses

Methodology: Exploratory study of translation/back-translation, followed by psychometric analysis in a sample of 107 nurses working in oncology services. Results: The scale showed high internal consistency (α = 0.89). Followin… Show more

“…The education level was high, with 70.4% having university education, and 64.3% identified themselves as a health professional. “…Death-competence can be defined as a construct representing a range of perceived knowledge and skills for coping with death, along with attitudes and beliefs about these abilities (Robbins, 1994). International studies have found greater death-competence to be associated with older age (Robbins, 1991a(Robbins, , 1991b(Robbins, , 1992(Robbins, , 1994Seo, Kim, Kim, & Lee, 2013;Haig, 2014), but not gender (Robbins, 1991a(Robbins, , 1992Reimer, 2007;Siracusa et al, 2011;Schmidt-RioValle et al, 2012;Haig, 2014;Camarneiro & Gomes, 2015), and the limited findings regarding the role of religiosity and spirituality (Seo et al, 2013;Haig, 2014) and educational level (Siracusa et al, 2011;Seo et al, 2013) have been inconsistent. The role of socio-economic status and occupation remains unknown (McNeely, 1998;Kim & Hwang, 2014).…”

“…In addition to managing a demand for the patient's death, nursing professionals need to care for both patients and their families, and this requires them to be effective. 5 Nursing professionals have a peculiar way to deal with the requirements of care for children with cancer, facing situations of suffering and the expectation of death and this assistance experience may affect them psychologically and emotionally. 6 Faced with the stress generated by the difficulty in dealing with death, nursing professionals can use coping strategies to alleviate the emotional burden involved in this process.…”
