Translation and functional roles of circular RNAs in human cancer

Abstract: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a new class of non-coding RNAs formed by covalently closed loops through backsplicing. Recent methodologies have enabled in-depth characterization of circRNAs for identification and potential functions. CircRNAs play important roles in various biological functions as microRNA sponges, transcriptional regulators and combining with RNA binding proteins. Recent studies indicated that some cytoplasmic circRNAs can be effectively translated into detectable peptides, which enlightened us… Show more

“…[6][7][8] As a special non-coding RNA, circular RNA (circRNA) has been shown to play a vital role in the occurrence of cancers. 9,10 CircRNA is considered to be an important regulator of cancer progression and mainly plays anti-cancer or pro-cancer role. 11,12 At present, many circRNAs are found in NSCLC, and their functions are illuminated.…”

“…Circular RNA (circRNA) is another kind of ncRNA comprising covalently closed single-stranded loops. Recent advances in RNA sequencing and bioinformatics tools have led to the discovery and identification of thousands of circRNAs and validated their important roles in the pathogenesis of cancers [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. They can mainly function as ceRNAs to modulate gene transcription by interacting with miRNAs or lncRNAs, sponging miRNAs, or RNA-binding proteins, and rarely can be translated into proteins [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ].…”
