Transitory anti-β2-glycoprotein I antibodies in infections

Abstract: SirÐIt has been reported, in patients exhibiting the anti-phospholipid antibodies syndrome (APS), that anti-b 2 -glycoproein I antibodies assay (ab 2 GPI) showed a higher speci®city than the standard aCL assay. 1 Compared to aCL, ab 2 GPI were more closely associated with previous history of thrombosis in APS, along with autoimmune disease or not. 2,3 Usually, Ig that bind b 2 GPI, either alone or as a phospholipid complex, were only found in an

“…14 However, Loisou et al, 15 who studied 12 patients with acute parvovirus B19 infection and without a history of thrombotic events, found a dependence of anticardiolipin binding on the presence of b2-GPI, showing a similarity with their SLE patients. Moreover, Guerin et al 16 studied 41 plasma samples from patients with various acute infections, positive lupus anticoagulant and absence of any thrombotic complications and observed that eight samples were signi®cantly positive for antibodies to b2-GPI. They then suggest that these antibodies may be transitory and asymptomatic during infectious states.…”
