Transition rather than balance: Organizing constraints for collective creativity in pharmaceutical development

Abstract: When it comes to organizing for collective creativity, management scholars typically advise balancing between constraint and freedom. However, this suggestion to balance is often too enigmatic in practice, neglects the dynamics inherent in creative processes, and predominantly highlights the inhibiting aspects of constraints. Thus, the present article aims to rethink this balancing proposition by asking how constraints unfold during collective creative processes. Based on four cases of pharmaceutical developme… Show more

“…They emphasized the recursive interplay between divergent and convergent forces but did not pay particular attention to the role of constraints. Vogelgsang (2020) demonstrated that creative processes are maintained through shifts between two different organizational constraint sources at different points in time, namely restraint and contingency. When novel insights are created, they can conflict with the formerly enabling constraint source due to them being either too strict or too vague.…”

“…The careful preparation of the collective creativity process, active participation of the brokers during the process and the use of the boundary objects and creativity methods are some of the ways of creating possibilities for collective creativity in virtual co-creation Vogelgsang (2020) Aimed to rethink this balancing proposition by asking how constraints unfold during collective creative processes…”

“…From the latter perspective, the human capital of companies (managers and workers) can react to creativity differently, depending on the economic context (de Vasconcellos et al, 2019). From a social point of view, creativity can emerge temporarily as a necessity to face crises (Caniëls & Rietzschel, 2015; Fortwengel et al, 2017), or in dynamic environments when creativity becomes a matter of survival (de Vasconcellos et al, 2019), where these barriers can inspire creativity (Vogelgsang, 2020). When barriers hinder creativity, crisis scenarios can have a detrimental effect, where creativity decreases because of scarce financial resources (Amabile & Pratt, 2016; Pellegrino & Savona, 2017).…”

“…If the environment is not controlled, it can generate uncertainty and negatively affect a company's creativity (Darvishmotevali et al, 2020; Smith et al, 2008) and also become a barrier for the participants of the creative process (Jahanshahi et al, 2020; Vogelgsang, 2020). However, the literature shows divergent results—while barriers can hinder creativity, they can also stimulate it (Caniëls & Rietzschel, 2015).…”
