The multiple power peaks obtained in the power-voltage (P-V) curve of a photovoltaic string under partially shaded condition results in a complicated maximum power point tracking (MPPT) process. Under this condition, the conventional MPPT methods are not acknowledged as they result in false and slow tracking. In this study three novel global MPPT (GMPPT) methods have been proposed and validated. These are named as large and small duty step (LSDS), large and mutable duty step (LMDS) and fast and intelligent GMPPT (FI-GMPPT). The LSDS method sweeps almost the entire P-V curve using a combination of LSDS. Small duty steps are used in predefined areas near all local maximum power points of the P-V curve. LMDS is a further improved method, which uses a combination of LMDSs. The FI-GMPPT is an advance true GMPPT method which limits the area to be swept during the search process. This results in a further reduction in sweep time. In this method, the unnecessary area is skipped during the sweep process. The improved performance of the projected methods has been demonstrated and validated using MATLAB/SIMULINK and hardware implementation.

This paper presents a technique to quickly determine the potential maximum power point (MPP) of a photovoltaic system using the duty cycle (D) of the DC/DC converter. The proposed method depends on estimating the open‐circuit voltage (Voc) and short‐circuit current (Isc) values under different operating conditions. It is an adapted version derived from the conventional Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm, designed to restrict the search area for the MPP. The working conditions, including temperature variations, irradiance, or both, are simulated in the PSIM environment and experimented with a simulator with parameters satisfied according to the proposed operating conditions. The research objective of this study also involves operating under partially shaded conditions. When comparing the results of this research with those obtained from the traditional P&O method and the Variable Step Size Perturb and Observe (VSSP&O) approach, it becomes evident that the proposed solution excels in terms of both convergence speed and performance, particularly when operating under partial shade conditions. In addition, this study's methods of determining Isc, Voc, and Dmp can be widely applied in low‐voltage and power systems.

Fossil fuels are being replaced by renewables. Most of the renewables are intermittent, to have reliable power the renewables have to be conditioned before injecting into the utility grid. The DC-DC converters are perfect power electronic devices for conditioning the renewables. The single ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) performs the conditioning with a very high voltage transfer gain and minimum ripples. The maximum power extraction from the PV panels is required for providing good quality DC power. Intelligent controllers can make use of optimization techniques. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique can optimize the controller to extract the maximum power. The SEPIC converter duty variation is optimized and a comparative analysis with the Buck-Boost converter is done in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. The proposed SEPIC converter system performed well by improving the power tracking by 40% and the system has been analysed in a battery charging environment.
