“…Agronomically, relative to Oryza, Z. latifolia generally has higher resistance to abiotic (such as cold) and biotic stresses (such as rice blast) Shen et al, 2011), and higher biomass production. Therefore, the Zizania genomes provide a genetic resource for rice breeding.…”

“…Therefore, the Zizania genomes provide a genetic resource for rice breeding. Efforts to transfer the Zizania genetic background into Oryza via distant hybridization have been successfully attempted over the last 15 years (Liu et al, 1999;Shen et al, 2011). The Zizania genome will also provide a diverse gene pool for rice molecular breeding.…”

“…To analyze the possible involvement of OsASR6 in rice defense, we examined its expression in response to bacterial pathogens Xoc strain oxy04 and Xoo strain PXO99 in wild-type (WT) rice cultivar Nipponbare, which carries no known R gene conferring resistance to the above strains and thus is susceptible to them [ 14 ]. OsASR6 expression in oxy04-inoculated rice leaves was significantly induced by 19.2 folds, compared with that in the sterilized H 2 O mock-infiltrated leaves at 5 d post inoculation (dpi) when the Xoc -infiltrated areas just began to show water-soaked symptoms.…”
