Transfusion effect of random donor platelet and single donor platelet in thrombocytopenic patients at tertiary care hospital of South Gujarat

Abstract: Background: Platelet transfusion plays a key role in therapy for the patients with thrombocytopenia. Superiority of Single donor platelet (SDP) over Random donor platelet (RDP) transfusions is largely assumed, but unproven. Platelet Rich Plasma-Platelet concentrate (PRP-PC) and Apheresis-PC were prepared and their therapeutic efficacy were assessed in thrombocytopenic patients. Methods: This study included 60 transfusion episodes consisting of 30 SDP and 30 RDP (147units of RDP). The post transfusion efficacy o… Show more

“…SDP is also important for shielding the patients from multiple immunological allogenic exposures. [ 78 ] Besides, SDP prepared with the use of platelet additive solutions would seem to be less likely to provoke allergic transfusion reactions, but convincing evidence of the superiority of SDP is not abundant. [ 82 ] With some types of current apheresis technology, the number of WBCs in a SDP averages at least a log less than the number of WBCs in the equivalent pool of RDP.…”

“…Single Donor Platelets offer several advantages over random donor concentrates including higher platelet count per unit, leukocyte reduction during collection, fewer donor exposures thus reducing the risk of infection and alloimmunization. 3 A number of apheresis equipment are available in the market which differ in their methodology and performance characteristics. In the literature we find various studies comparing the different aspects of platelet apheresis equipment.…”
