Transforming Industrial Districts: Large Firms and Small Business Networks in the Italian Eyewear Industry

Abstract: This study is an evolutionary comparative analysis of how large, vertically integrated firms and networks of small firms perform, in response to the challenges posed by globalization. It focuses on the Italian eyewear industry which represents an ideal laboratory for studying the establishment and transformation of such diverse production models under ceteris paribus conditions (same industry, same challenges, same product, and same geographical location). Looking at longitudinal statistical data for the Bellu… Show more

“…Following evolutionary economics, in a cluster strategy for searching for knowledge sources are strongly influenced by the richness of technological opportunities. Due to the internal heterogeneity of the cluster firms (Camuffo 2003), knowledge in a network is distributed in an uneven way (Giuliani and Bell 2005;Giuliani 2007a), restraining its access to a specific group of actors (Morrison and Rabellotti 2009).…”

“…Intense economic globalisation can breed increased competition and disembedding of the local system (Camuffo, 2003;Nassimbeni, 2003;Samarra and Belussi, 2006). Disembeddedness refers to transition from reasoning based on social relationships to more commercially oriented reasoning, and change towards increased competition that gradually wipes out former ties and leads to a minor anchorage to the local environment (Barabel et al, 2007).…”

“…Only a few studies detail the forces affecting industrial cluster companies and changes in their sourcing strategies (Camuffo, 2003;Furlan, Grandinetti, & Campagnolo, 2009). Within this stream of literature it has been observed that these companies are increasingly involved in supply relationships with foreign partners, in relation to the increasing pressure in mature manufacturing sectors (textile, clothing and footwear, mechanical) by emerging economies, such as China and India (Camuffo, Furlan, Romano, & Vinelli, 2006;Chiarvesio & Di Maria, 2009).…”
