Transformative Learning in Developing as an Engaged Global Citizen

Abstract: This article investigates students’ experiences of learning about privilege and oppression in the context of an introductory university course in civic engagement and global citizenship. Participants included 24 students enrolled in the course during either the 2013–2014 or the 2014–2015 academic year. “…Kitchenham’s (2008) review of transformative learning (TL) theory continues to be cited heavily and, after over a decade, is in the top 5% of all research outputs by Altmetric; however, we argue that the review should now be updated by applying the theory to other settings with a particular emphasis on assessing the model. For example, Robinson and Levac (2018) reviewed the theory as a model for developing the engaged global citizen, and Parkhouse (2016) used the central theory of conscientization to reveal the power of contradictory consciousness through critical pedagogy in U.S. history classrooms. Additionally, Jarvis (2012) made a strong connection between fiction and film and TL; Dirkx (2008) and Tisdell (2008) both argued for the role of emotional learning as part of deep transformations; and Mezirow (2012) revisited TL theory to discuss how adults can and do learn to think like adults.…”
