This study aimed to determine the associations between engineers' perceptions of participative decision-making and autonomy, and their creative performance. The study utilised a paired matchup technique, with engineers and managers as respondents. Managers were responsible for assessing engineers' creative performance. Due to the study match-up design, questionnaires measuring participative decision-making, autonomy, and creative performance were distributed to the electrical and electronic manufacturing firms. SmartPLS software was used to analyse the hypothesised relationships. The results indicated that engineers' participative decision-making significantly predicted autonomy dimensions (work schedule, work criterion, and work method). Engineers' autonomy regarding work schedule, work criterion, and work method had no positive relationship with creative performance. The results showed that engineers' work schedule, work criterion, and work method negatively mediated the relationships between participative decision-making and creative performance. The findings indicated an insignificant direct effect and negative mediation of engineers' work schedule, work criterion, and work method on creative performance, pointing to the structured nature of work. This situation leaves engineers with minimal opportunity to determine the work designs, time allocations, and multicriteria of job descriptions. The study recommends potential directions for studying the improvement of engineers' creative performance in future studies.

PurposeBuilding on the social cognitive theory, a mediation model was examined to understand the role of teacher self-efficacy as the underlying mechanism for the relationship between instructional leadership and teacher job satisfaction.Design/methodology/approachThe study tests a mediation model between instructional leadership, teacher self-efficacy and job satisfaction. The data were collected via online survey from primary school teachers (N = 320) working for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MDC) in India. The mediation model was tested using the AMOS 22.0 after establishing the reliability and validity of measures.FindingsRegression analyses using the bootstrapping method indicated that teacher self-efficacy mediates the relationship between instructional leadership and teacher job satisfaction.Research limitations/implicationsThis is a cross-sectional study. The scope for causal inferences is, thus, limited.Practical implicationsIn the Indian setting, the study examines the association between instructional leadership and job satisfaction. The results show that the instructional leadership of the school principal is strongly related to teachers' self-efficacy, which, in turn is positively associated with teacher’s job satisfaction. Further, the findings confirm that instructional leadership, emphasizing instructional improvement, improves teachers' self-efficacy and job satisfaction.Originality/valueThe study explains the underlying process through which a school principal’s instructional leadership is related to teacher job satisfaction. This study is perhaps the first to focus on an Indian or a non-Western context.

Empowering commitment: unraveling the impact of motivating language and the mediating role of trust

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the direct and indirect effects of motivating language on organizational commitment, as this phenomenon has drawn the attention of researchers.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs social exchange theory and motivating language theory to examine data collected from 217 full-time employees across various US-based companies. The proposed hypotheses were analyzed using the PLS-SEM method.FindingsThis study’s findings demonstrate that motivating language positively affects employees’ organizational commitment and affective trust but not cognitive trust, which mediates the relationship between motivating language and organizational commitment.Research limitations/implicationsThere are some limitations of our study that need to be mentioned. First, there are concerns about survey data collection via M-Turk (Shapiro et al., 2013). We attempted to overcome some of these problems by including questions to identify careless respondents. Also, we eliminated many respondents who completed the surveys in unreasonably short periods of time. Hence, we believe we accounted for response bias with these check points. Also, while we believe our final sample is a representative sample due to the significant amount of data elimination during the data collection, we believe that checking for non-response bias, as Armstrong and Overton (1977) suggest, is imperative. Unfortunately, due to the nature of M-Turk, that is impossible. However, M-Turk recruits respondents based on the parameters provided by the researchers, so we expect the non-respondents to be not significantly different from the respondents. In parallel to that, we acknowledge the limitations of our study sample. Due to that reason, our findings must be considered within the context of our sample parameters. We urge future researchers of this area to further validate our findings in different types of samples.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, they are the first to analyze the impact of motivating language on organizational commitment and the mediating role of trust (cognitive and affective) in this relationship.
