Transferrin (β-globulin) type and milk and butterfat production in dairy cows

Abstract: 1. The transferrin types of 225 Jersey cows in thirteen herds, and 433 Australian Illawarra Shorthorn cows in twenty-four herds in Queensland were determined. The effect of transferrin type on lactation length, milk yield, butterfat yield and butterfat percentage was assessed by a leastsquares multiple linear regression analysis.2. The results for the two breeds did not differ significantly. Combining the data from both breeds, it was found that on average D/D cows had lactations 13·9 days longer than A/A cows… Show more

“…It has been shown that milk yield of dairy cattle is correlated with transferrin type (Ashton, 19606;Ashton, Fallon & Sutherland, 1962). If a similar association occurs in sheep the growth rate of suckling lambs, and hence their chance of survival, wool production, etc., may be partly related to maternal transferrin type.…”

“…Many polymorphisms have been found in the bovine Tf gene (Ashton et al, 1964;Zhang et al, 2008;Sanz et al, 2010). Twelve co-dominant alleles of Tf have been identified from a single locus using starch gel electrophoresis.…”

“…In the author's ()pinion it was caused by higber metabolic rate in cows with high milk production and thus the greater deficiency of mineral and vitamins) occurring in such animals. On the other hand) Ashton et al (1964)) Kliment (1974), Siracky and Golota (1971), Przytulski (1979) reported that Tf DD cows produced more milk in comparison with cows with other Tf types.…”
