Free-threshing einkorn wheat (Triticum sinskajae A. Filat. et Kurk.) is an excellent source of resistance against wheat diseases and grain quality parameters. A new synthetic hexaploid amphiploid SHW45 (T. durum 198-2 × Triticum sinskajae acc. 18397) was studied in C 2-7 generations and characterised for field growing. Some traits such as a plant height and spike features including fertility and spike fragility revealed a large phenotypic variation. A strong selection for resistance to spikelet dispersal and a number of seeds per selfed spike led to the creation of several lines. They manifested a variety of resistance to powdery mildew at the seedling stage. Three amphiploid lines with diverse phenotypes and a complete resistance to spike brittleness were crossed as females to the wheat cultivar 'Sadovska ranozreika-4'. Viable hybrid seeds are obtained only when the synthetic form is a female parent. F 1 hybrids of amphiploid line 45-10 bore an average of 9 seeds per isolated spike, which was a significantly better yield than that of other hybrids. The lines showed homogeneity in high molecular weight (HMW) glutenins, as subunit pairs Ax2*+Ay1 and Bx17+By18 are inherited from the T. sinskajae, and T. durum form 198-2, respectively. In total, 14 F 2 , 22 BC 1 , and 141 F 2 -BC 1 seeds from the crosses with two bread wheat cultivars were planted in the field. The synthetic amphiploid lines might be promising genetic resources for resistance to powdery mildew and grain quality in wheat breeding.

This study characterized six introgression lines obtained from crossing two winter bread wheat varieties Albena and Slaveya with the D-genome synthetic hexaploid wheat 530-1. Phenotypically, the lines differed from the parents, as five of them expressed red spike color versus line 45-5 producing new coloration, identified as striped or banded glume pigmentation. All lines were taller, with longer ears and spikelets, later in heading time and less productive in grain yield than both wheat parents. They showed some positive traits in the field: optimal test weight (78-80 kg/hl), high thousand kernel weight (48-51 g), low sprouted seeds (0.3-1.5%), and high falling number (314-350 s). Two lines (38-7 and 46-7) exceeded the parents in grain protein content. In the competitive variety trial, Albena showed significantly higher sprouted grains (4.1%) and extreme measurements for a percentage of germination (99.0%) and germination index (83.0%) in 2022. The data identified Albena as a wheat variety with pre-harvest sprouting susceptibility. Of the lines, only 45-5 stood out with the lowest germination values and appeared as a promising genotype with resistance to pre-harvest sprouting. The introgression lines exerted useful genetic diversity for the studied traits and could serve as resources for quality improvement in wheat breeding programs.

The current study explored the effects of six spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, four sowing dates (early, timely, late and very late) and their interactions on quantitative and qualitative traits during two cropping years. A combined analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the effect of sowing date was significant on kernel yield and filling period. The quality traits were not significantly affected by the sowing date. Interaction of sowing date × cultivar × year was significant for some quantity and quality traits including yield, filling period, sedimentation value and gluten index. Average kernel yield reduction of all the cultivars, measured under late and very late planting, was 34% and 50% of optimum sown (November) in 2013-2014, and 25% and 38% in 2014-2015, respectively. For most of the studied traits, the effect of year was confirmed on higher level compared to the effect of cultivar or sowing date. The range for cultivar effect was high for thousand kernel weight, medium for gluten index and low for the other traits. The sowing date had the highest contribution to kernel yield followed by filling period and wet gluten, respectively. Negative relationship was observed between quality traits and kernel yield, but quality traits significantly and positively correlated with each other. In summary, the quality and quantity potential of wheat can be exploited by planting it at optimum time.
