Transcriptome analysis of the bivalve Placuna placenta mantle reveals potential biomineralization-related genes

Abstract: The shells of window pane oyster Placuna placenta are very thin and exhibit excellent optical transparency and mechanical robustness. However, little is known about the biomineralization-related proteins of the shells of P. placenta. In this work, we report the comprehensive transcriptome of the mantle tissue of P. placenta for the first time. The unigenes of the mantle tissue of P. placenta were annotated by using the public databases such as nr, GO, KOG, KEGG, and Pfam. 24,343 unigenes were annotated accordi… Show more

“…The KEGG analysis for P. bremeri de novo assembled transcriptome assigned unigenes to Wnt, Hedgehog, and Notch pathways relevant for regulation of development. KEGG analysis-based categorization of unigenes to such signaling pathways responsible for development has also been demonstrated in the case of mollusks (De Oliveira et al 2016;Song et al 2022). Of course, the DEGs studied in P. bremeri transcriptome are helpful for understanding the role of genes in specific stages of development.…”

“…"Binding", "catalytic activity", and "transporter activity" were dominant in the molecular function category (Figure 1D). The term "extracellular matrix" associated with the cellular component category is generally supposed to be related to shell formation genes (Song et al, 2022), and collagen and calciumbinding protein were recognized in this term.…”

“…They are often found in sandy or muddy substrates in shallow estuarine lagoons or small bays and are extensively collected in the Indo-West Pacific regions such as Indonesia. It has two highly transparent, disc-shaped flat mineralized valves [3], and its inner surface shell has a V-shaped ligament. The right valve is almost flat, while the left is slightly convex [4].…”
