Transcriptome Analysis of Key Genes Involved in Color Variation between Blue and White Flowers of Iris bulleyana

Abstract: Iris bulleyana Dykes (Southwest iris) is an extensively distributed Iridaceae species with blue or white flowers. Hereby, we performed a systematic study, employing metabolomics and transcriptomics to uncover the subtle color differentiation from blue to white in Southwest iris. Fresh flower buds from both cultivars were subjected to flavonoid/anthocyanin and carotenoid-targeted metabolomics along with transcriptomic sequencing. Among 297 flavonoids, 24 anthocyanins were identified, and 13 showed a strong down… Show more

“…Given their overlapping expression with the anthocyanin content, IgCHS, IgF3H, IgANS, IgUFGT1, and IgUFGT2 in the anthocyanin synthetic pathway play key roles in anthocyanin accumulation in Clarence. Of these genes, CHS is the primary rate-limiting enzyme in anthocyanin biosynthesis that mediates the synthesis of naringenin chalcone from 4-coumaroyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA [30,31]. The high expression of CHS provides sufficient amounts of precursor compounds for anthocyanin accumulation [6,32].…”

“…For example, anthocyanin accumulation is positively correlated with UFGT expression in Clematis tientaiensis [51]. The repression of UFGT in Iris bulleyana leads to a change in their flower color from blue to white [52]. As a branch of the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway, proanthocyanidin begins with the reduction of leucoanthocyanidin and anthocyanidin, which is catalyzed by leucoanthocyanidin reductase (LAR) and anthocyanidin reductase (ANR), respectively, while high levels of proanthocyanidins inhibit anthocyanin production [53].…”

“…A tissue layer called sclera covers almost the whole eyeball's surface. 1 The cornea, the transparent, dome-shaped front part of the eye, directs light into the eye. The colored component of the eye, the iris, which contains the pupil, is a dark hole in the middle.…”
