Transcription variants of SLA-7, a swine non classical MHC class I gene

Abstract: In pig, very little information is available on the non classical class I (Ib) genes of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) i.e. SLA-6, -7 and -8. Our aim was to focus on the transcription pattern of the SLA-7 gene. RT-PCR experiments were carried out with SLA-7 specific primers targeting either the full coding sequence (CDS) from exon 1 to the 3 prime untranslated region (3UTR) or a partial CDS from exon 4 to the 3UTR. We show that the SLA-7 gene expresses a full length transcript not yet identified th… Show more

“…In our study, we identified a predicted SLA-7 transcript with seven exons for all species, but stop codons were present in P.africanus and P.tajacu (residue 386). An RNA study in domestic pigs for SLA-7 identified a transcript with eight exons (Hu et al 2011), differing from the current annotation of seven exons. Its complex transcription pattern reveals a need for further investigation of this, and the remaining non-classical genes, to address questions related to their role and species-specific variants.…”

“…Our results show that the SLA-7 gene also was detected for both Duroc and Pietrain. Hu et al [ 76 ] mentioned that SLA-7 is related to the swine major histocompatibility complex, especially to the non classical MHC class Ib genes. These genes seem to be suitable candidates for investigations of species-specific immunity-related roles [ 76 ].…”

These genes seem to be suitable candidates for investigations of species-specific immunity-related roles [ 76 ]. These informations have to be linked to the postulation of Lunney et al [ 51 ] that findings like that could help to design effective vaccines and therapeutic strategies.…”

“…Some sequence variants appear to regulate gene expression, rather than coding sequence [4] . A complex transcriptional pattern of non-classical SLA Ib genes, possibly due to post-transcriptional regulation, has been observed [5] .…”
