Transcription and Qualitative Methods: Implications for Third Sector Research

Abstract: While there is a vast literature that considers the collection and analysis of qualitative data, there has been limited attention to audio transcription as part of this process. In this paper, I address this gap by discussing the main considerations, challenges and implications of audio transcription for qualitative research on the third sector. I present a framework for conducting audio transcription for researchers and transcribers, as well as recommendations for writing up transcription in qualitative resea… Show more

“…In retrospect, we would recommend extracting key quotes while listening to the transcripts in stage 3 ( Table 1 ) using time stamping so that quotes can be listened to again in context later, rather than during the higher-level analysis in stage 9 ( Table 1 ), as it was time-consuming to locate specific quotes from the recordings based on memory and field notes. Another option to enhance timeliness in future studies is to use the Zoom transcription feature, which automatically transcribes recorded data ( McMullin, 2021 ).…”

“…Transcription typically means converting audio data into text data 4 . Because word-for-word transcription can be very time-consuming and expensive and it can be prone to transcription errors, 4 the person transcribing the data must make many decisions because transcribed data can differ from the audio data owing to syntax, word choice, or grammar issues. Thus, the transcriber must decide what to include, omit, or correct 4 .…”

“…Thus, the transcriber must decide what to include, omit, or correct. 4 In addition, the transcriber should also be concerned with other factors, such as a "giggle" or "sigh" or other sounds that might have implications to the researchers.…”
