Transcoding-Based Error-Resilient Video Adaptation for 3G Wireless Networks

Abstract: Transcoding is an effective method to provide video adaptation for heterogeneous internetwork video access and communication environments, which require the tailoring (i.e., repurposing) of coded video properties to channel conditions, terminal capabilities, and user preferences. This paper presents a video transcoding system that is capable of applying a suite of error resilience tools on the input compressed video streams while controlling the output rates to provide robust communications over error-prone an… Show more

“…Hence, there is a need to perform trans-coding, trans-sizing and trans-rating in such converged Next Generation Networks. Video trans-coding is the process of converting the format of an input coded video content into another format [9]. Video trans-coding was performed in [10] in which a trans-coding proxy was used and trans-coding was performed such that an MPEG-1 video stream was converted to a Quality Motion (QM) video stream.…”

“…A similar approach appeared in [6] which estimates the effect of error propagation and selectively applies Adaptive Intra Refresh. Recent work on adaptive error resiliency transcoding based on intra refresh algorithms is reported in [7,8,9]. A more complex transcoder was introduced in [10] which recalculates Motion Vectors (MVs) and coding modes based on a given error model and estimation of distortion at the decoder side.…”
