Transcatheter Closure of Patent Foramen Ovale: A Single Center Experience

Abstract: BACKGROUND:Percutaneous transcatheter closure (PTC) of patent foramen ovale (PFO) is implicated in cryptogenic stroke, transitional ischemic attack (TIA) and treatment of a migraine.AIM:Our goal was to present our experience in the interventional treatment of PFO, as well as to evaluate the short and mid-term results in patients with closed PFO.MATERIAL AND METHODS:Transcatheter closure of PFO was performed in 52 patients (67.3% women, mean age 40.7 ± 11.7 years). Patients were interviewed for subjective gradi… Show more

“…4-58% of patients had ameliorated migraine with aura and 20-68% migraine without aura. 6-43% of patients had no change in symptoms while 3-8% had worse symptoms ( 65 85 ) (see Table 1 ). In the case control studies, PFO closure is also associated with decreased migraine severity ( 32 , 86 90 ) (see Table 2 ).…”

“…During raised pressure in the right heart (Valsalva maneuver) in diving, squatting, coughing, there is the direct transfer of venous blood from RA to LA through PFO, which leads to the neurological events associated with a paradoxical embolism [ 12 ]. Association has been reported between the size of PFO, the magnitude of the right-to-left shunt, and the presence of atrial septal aneurysm with increased chances of cerebral stroke [ 13 ].…”
