Transcatheter closure of aortic sinus to left atrial fistula caused by erosion of amplatzer septal occluder

Abstract: One year after Amplatzer device closure of an atrial septal defect, an aortic to left atrial fistula was diagnosed in a patient who developed a new onset murmur with no other symptoms. The fistula was closed with a 4-mm Amplatzer Septal Occluder during a transcatheter procedure, avoiding the need for cardiac surgical repair.

“…Since receiving Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in the United States for the closure of ostium secundum ASDs in 2001, over 30,000 devices have been implanted worldwide with only eight case reports of aorto-atrial fistulas [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] .…”

“…6,11 These fistulae have variable clinical presentation and implications. 3,6,7,11 Mahadevan et al 3 reported the use of an ASO to percutaneously close a 3 mm aorto-left atrial fistula caused by erosion of ASO two years after ASD closure. 5,12 More recently, successful transcatheter closure of aorto-atrial communications has been reported with minimal complications.…”
