Transaction costs for carbon sequestration projects in the tropical forest sector

Abstract: There is general consensus that carbon (C) sequestration projects in forests are a relatively low cost option for mitigating climate change, but most studies on the subject have assumed that transaction costs are negligible. The objectives of the study were to examine transaction costs for forest C sequestration projects and to determine the significance of the costs based on economic analyses. Here we examine four case studies of active C sequestration projects being implemented in tropical countries and deve… Show more

“…The following caveats should be considered when interpreting our results. The cost and benefit estimates we present here are averages, however spatial variation has a large influence on the costs and benefits of REDD+ projects (Pagiola and Bosquet 2009). This can be interpreted from the high level of variation in both the cost and carbon benefit estimates within strategies.…”

“…Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) forestry projects began from 2006 in light of carbon offsetting targets, then, the Climate Action Reserve (CAR) projects, Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the American Carbon Registry (ACR) came into action (Pearson et al, 2014). Although, several policies and carbon market business were taken, the rise in atmospheric carbon concentration and its consequence are at alarming rate.…”
