Trans-Modulation in Wireless Relay Networks

Abstract: Abstract-In this letter, we consider the trans-modulation design for the decode-and-forward relay networks. We propose to reassign the constellation points at the relay nodes to minimize the symbol error rate (SER) at the destination node. The proposed trans-modulation scheme can significantly improve the system SER performance without increasing the complexity of the system, especially when the relays are close to the source. For this case, improvements of about 2 dB for 16-QAM constellation and about 3 dB fo… Show more

“…Solving for the optimal mapper represents a massive combinatorial problem [8], [9], hence we only propose a simple approach 2 . An effective yet simple technique to realize this criterion is to organize adjacent constellation points of Mapper 1 as far as possible in Mapper 2; for MQAM this corresponds to the grouping of alternate diagonal pairs of each quadrant and the interchange of these pairs with pairs in the opposite diagonal quadrant.…”

“…In [17] a trans-modulation approach was proposed in which the relay reassigns the constellation points so that the destination performance is improved. In other words, the relay decodes the broadcast phase signal and send the matching signal point from the relabeled constellation to the destination.…”

“…The reassignment at the relay is designed so that by combining the original and the relabeled constellation points the destination's performance improves. Figure 10 depicts the performance comparison of the SSC scheme and the trans-modulation scheme based on the constellation reassignment that is proposed in [17]. The numerical results of Figure 10 are calculated based on the uncoded signal transmission from the source and the relay.…”

“…Since these two seminal papers, a large body of literature has been devoted to the design, analysis, and implementation of cooperative schemes for various scenarios. In [11], the authors proposed a constellation reassignment scheme at the relay to minimize the symbol error rate at the destination node. In [12], a link adaptive regeneration strategy was developed for decode-and-forward (DF) systems.…”
