In this letter, we apply labeling diversity to a spacetime block coded system, which does not require channel coding or bit interleaving. The proposed system is investigated for both Rayleigh frequency-flat fast and quasi-static fading channels. The theoretical average bit error probability (ABEP) of the system is formulated using the union bound approach. A possible optimization criterion for the design of the mappers for both Mary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) and M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) modulated systems is suggested; however, due to a large solution space, a simple method is investigated.

In this paper, a single-hop single-relay system with a direct link between the source and the destination is considered when the relay operates in the half-duplex mode. Motivated by the concept of signal space diversity, this paper introduces signal space cooperation, in which cooperation between the source and the relay is achieved using a novel constellation design approach. In this approach, the original constellation is expanded so that each member of the new constellation inherits its components from at least two members of the original constellation. The expanded constellation enables the relay to extract the required information in order to cooperate in the relay phase, and it helps the destination to effectively combine received signals during the broadcast phase and the relay phase. The analytical study of the proposed scheme leads to the development of two design criteria for the constellation expansion approach. The proposed design criteria aim at maximizing the relay role in the cooperative scheme by increasing the performance of the source-relay link. In this way, the source and the relay can effectively cooperate in order to maximize the overall performance of the system. The signal space cooperative scheme can be used for any constellation size without incurring significant complexity overhead to the system. Numerical results depict superior performance in comparison with other cooperative schemes such as the adaptive decode and forward and the distributed turbo code schemes.

The recent development of vehicular networking technologies brings the promise of improved driving safety and traffic efficiency. Cooperative communication is recognized as a low-complexity solution for enhancing both the reliability and the throughput of vehicular networks. However, due to the openness of wireless medium, the vehicular wireless communications (VWC) is also vulnerable to potential eavesdropping attacks. To tackle with this issue, we in this paper propose a novel user-cooperation scheme with anti-eavesdropping capabilities. Specifically, prior to any frame transmission, a source-relay pair is jointly selected to maximize the achievable secrecy rate. After that, the selected relay assists the source to deliver its data to the destination. The proposed selection scheme can be realized in a fully distributed manner, and the security is guaranteed without using any encryption techniques at the upper layers. The closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability and the intercept probability are derived, and the achievable diversity order is also analyzed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the competing counterparts in terms of both the secrecy outage probability and the average secrecy rate.
