TraffCon: an intelligent traffic control system for wireless vehicular networks

Abstract: Traffic Congestion is a very serious problem which is becoming ever worse as the growth in the number of cars on the road significantly outpaces the provision of road capacity. This paper presents TraffCon, a novel Traffic Management System (TMS) for Wireless Vehicular Networks that combats this problem by seeking to optimize the usage of the existing road capacity. It also outlines an architecture which includes a novel server-side decision making module, that enables the dissemination of instructions to vehi… Show more

“…In other words, the flooding-based transmission methods are sensitive, but not accurate. 4 We postulate here that geocasting-based message diffusion might provide a better trade-off between accuracy and sensitivity. However, an approach like this implies knowing the geographic zones where the messages are likely to be most useful.…”

“…In these systems, traffic data were collected by sensors attached to the road network. (Notice [1], TMC [15], TraffCon [4].) This information was sent to a traffic center where it was compiled and then transmitted to the end users by FM radio (RDS protocol).…”

“…Fuel consumption has been reduced up to 20% using this system. A client/server approach was used in TraffConan innovative traffic management system for wireless vehicular networks (Collins and Muntean (2007)) by the goal of reducing traffic congestion and increasing traffic flow under the best usage of the existing road capacity. Traffcon assumes that a vehicle is equipped with a GPS device that is connected to a computing device via wireless communications.…”

“…It is in this context that TraffCon is introduced as a novel Traffic Management System for MOVE [14]. TraffCon requires vehicles to have a GPS receiver (enabling location awareness) connected to a wireless enabled computing device with an interface capable of conveying information to the driver.…”
