Traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacological properties of Sophora alopecuroides L

Abstract: Sophora alopecuroides L., known as ku dou zi in China, has a long history as a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of bacillary dysentery, enteritis, hepatitis, and other diseases, and exerts a critical role in anti-tumor. It contains abundant of alkaloids such as oxymatrine, matrine, and total alkaloids, which have been developed in China as anti-disease drugs related with inhibition of the angiogenesis-associated factors, anti-inflammatory response, and regulation of JNK, p38 MAP kinase, and NF-κB… Show more

“…As for its anti-cancer roles, ALO induces anti-tumor effects against several human cancers, including multiple myeloma, prostate cancer, breast cancer, thyroid cancer, osteosarcoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma. 34 In addition, ALO can significantly induce apoptosis in colon cancer (SW480 and HCT116) cells. 35 Although ALO induces cell cycle stagnation in the G2/M phase and simultaneously induces p21 and p53 expression to increase and decrease the expression of Cyclin D1 and B1, its specific target remains unclear.…”

“…These alkaloids can be classified into four types, namely, matrine‐type, cytisine‐type, aloperine‐type and sparteine‐type alkaloids [1,2,4–8] . In particular, matrine‐type alkaloids exhibit a wide range of activities, including anti‐inflammatory, [2,4,5,8–11] antiviral, [1,4–6,8] antitumor, [4,5,8,12–14] antibacterial, [8] antifibrosis, [5] anti‐arrhythmia [15] and immunosuppressive [5] . In China, some matrine‐type alkaloids, such as matrine and oxymatrine, have been used for the treatment of inflammation, hepatitis B and cancer in the clinic [4,6,9–11,16] .…”
