Many plants are used for ethnoveterinary purposes in South Africa, particularly in rural areas. Extracts of 17 plant species employed to treat infectious diseases were prepared using three solvents and the antibacterial activity of the extracts was determined against two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria. Anthelmintic activity was evaluated against the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and toxicity was determined using the brine shrimp larval mortality test. Most of the plant extracts demonstrated antibacterial activity, with the best minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) being 0.1 mg mL −1 . More than a third of the extracts displayed anthelmintic activity. Toxic effects against brine shrimp larvae were shown by 30% of extracts, with the lowest LC 50 recorded as 0.6 mg mL −1 . The promising biological activity displayed by a number of plant extracts supports the ethnoveterinary use of these plants but in vivo tests are required to ascertain fully their medicinal properties and potential toxicity.

Praziquantel (PZQ) is the drug of choice against schistosomiasis. However, PZQ was found not fully effective. A new trend from natural plant sources was used to compete schistosomiasis. In the present study, the antischistosomal activities of Curcumin extract and /or PZQ were evaluated. Parasitological and histopathological examination of liver has been explored. Moreover, Surface topography of the recovered worms was inspected by SEM. On the other hand, the total protein and DNA fragmentation percentage were estimated in infected and infected treated mice as compared to control group. Treatment of infected CD1 mice with curcumin extract alone didn't show any detectable changes in the parasitological or histological parameters. The infected mice treated with PZQ only, showed a significant decrease in the total worm burden, egg load (52%), with increase in degenerated eggs (58%) in the oogram pattern.However, treating infected CD1 mice with combined therapy (curcumin extract + PZQ) showed extremely significant reduction in female and male worm count (93% & 84%) respectively. Liver tissue egg load decreased by 88%, intestinal egg load decreased by 97%. Combined therapy decreased granuloma count and diameter with significant increase in degenerated egg in the oogram count. Moreover, the studied biomarkers, related to liver function and DNA damage were significantly improved in infected mice treated with curcumin combined with PZQ as compared to either drug alone. . In conclusion, curcumin extract in combination with PZQ has a synergetic effect and could be more promising in controlling schistosomiasis.Copy Right, IJAR, 2016,. All rights reserved.

SUMMARYThe present study was undertaken to assess the effect of the crude extract of Cleome droserifolia (CD) leaves on experimentally infected mice with Schistosoma mansoni. Two groups of mice, showing a patent infection of S. mansoni, one of them was daily treated with an alcoholic extract of CD leaves (0.31 g kg -1 body weight, i.p.) for 21 days. The schistosomicidal activity of the CD extract was evaluated, three weeks post-treatment, on some parasitological and histopathological aspects including worm load, oogram pattern, faecal eggs releasing and granuloma formation. In addition, serum thyroid hormones levels (tri-iodothyronine; T 3 and tetra-iodo-thyronin; T 4 ), serum total protein contents and hepatic reduced glutathione (GSH) were evaluated. Treatment using CD extract resulted in a weak reduction in worm burden (32.46%) and affected the viability of both mature and immature eggs as indicated by the increase in the percentage of dead eggs and the decrease in the percentage of live ones. In addition, a week posttreatment, eggs elimination was observed in the stool of the infected-treated group which was low compared to the infected group. There was a suppressive effect of the extract on granuloma formation that could be due to the antioxidant effect of the extract. These data are confirmed by increasing hepatic GSH, serum total proteins and thyroid hormone levels in the infected-treated group as compared to the infected group. Treatment significantly enhanced β globulin fractions of the protein. Based on these assumptions, CD extract has beneficial effects on thyroid hormones status and anti-schistosomiasis activity. The beneficial effects of CD extract could be related to its direct effects on the parasite, and secondary to its effect on the antioxidant capacity of the host. The present study could emphasize the precise mechanism (s) of CD extract protection.
