Traditional Chinese medicine as adjunctive therapy improves the long-term survival of lung cancer patients

Abstract: This study demonstrated adjunctive therapy with traditional Chinese medicine may improve overall survival of lung cancer patients. This study also suggested traditional Chinese medicine may be used as an adjunctive therapy for cancer treatment. These observational findings need being validated by future randomized controlled trials to rule out the possibility of effect due to holistic care.

“…Alternative therapies are common in the United States (45.0-51.8%) [19,32] and Norwegian (33.8%) [33]. ere were 27.48% CHM users in this study; in contrast, only 12-20% of colon cancer patients in the NHIRD database receive CHM treatment [34]. However, our research findings are in line with prior studies, showing a higher survival rate and longer survival time for CHM users.…”

“…Multiple studies have demonstrated that conventional formulas could inhibit cancer drug resistance or metastasis via regulating T cell phenotype, macrophage polarization, chemokine expression and immune checkpoint [27,28]. Meta-analyses of clinical trials have also demonstrated that traditional medical practice could improve cancer patients' survival period and life quality, accompanied by normalization of tumor immune microenvironment [14,[29][30][31][32]. Meanwhile, a number of TCM formulas have been commercialized and prescribed to cancer patients with positive clinical efficacy, such as Huaier granule, PHY906 and Huachansu, which shows great effects on tumor microenvironment modulation including macrophage inhibition, T cell differentiation and cytokine secretion [30,33,34].…”
