Cultivated land protection is related to food security and sustainable development. As an important reserve resource, the protection and development of cultivated land in mountainous areas need attention from governments and academia. This paper analyses the long‐term evolution process cultivated land in mountainous areas of Southwest China by using large‐scale remote sensing, topographic relief amplitude model, and a modified binary logistic regression model, to understand internal reasons for evolution differentiation at the macro level. The results show that untransformed cultivated land is mainly distributed below the topographic relief amplitude of 770 m. The transformation direction and spatial characteristics of transformed cultivated land gradually shift to low relief amplitude (<631 m) areas with time. Construction land accounts for 51.11% of the cultivated land transformation, usually distributed in flatlands or basins below the relief amplitude of 498 m, and hilly cultivated land around it displays a fluctuating recovery process. Topography is the most important factor affecting the evolution of cultivated land in mountainous areas. However, there are still differences in the driving mechanism of cultivated land evolution types, and some key policies in China in the past directly affected the evolution paths of cultivated land in mountainous areas. The research results can provide ideas for the utilization and protection of cultivated land in similar mountainous areas.

Analyses of landscape change patterns that are based on elevation and slope can not only provide reasonable interpretations of landscape patterns but can also help to reveal evolutionary laws. However, landscape change patterns and their model in different landforms of the typical watershed in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) has not been quantified and assessed effectively. As a complex geographical unit, the ecological environment in the middle reach of the Yangtze River has experienced great changes due to the construction of the Three Gorges Project (TGP) and its associated human activities. Here, based mainly on a digital elevation model (DEM) and remotely sensed images from 1986, 2000, 2010, and 2017 and by using GIS technology, speeds/ trends of landscape change, the index of landscape type change intensity, landscape pattern indices, and landscape ecological security index, the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of different elevations, slopes, and buffer landscape types were analyzed in typical watersheds, as well as an evolutionary model of the landscape pattern. The results indicated that (1) the landscape types along with the land classification and buffer zone that were influenced by the TGR construction have undergone a phased change, with the period 2000–2010 being the most dramatic period of landscape evolution during the impoundment period; (2) landscape type shifts from human-dominated farmland to nature-driven forestland and shrub-land as elevations, slopes and buffer distances increased. The landscape has shifted from diversity to relative homogeneity; (3) land types and buffer zones played essential roles in the landscape pattern index, which is reflected in the differences in landscape type indices for spatial extension and temporal characteristics. The results of this paper illustrate the spatial–temporal characteristics of various landscape types at three distinct stages in the construction of the TGR. These findings indicate that the landscape ecological security of the watershed is improving year by year. The follow-up development of the TGRA needs to consider the landscape change patterns of different landforms.

Since the 21st century, China's rural areas have experienced far-reaching social and economic transformation. Studying the evolution and transformation of rural land use landscape pattern under this background is of great significance to reveal the evolution of human-land relationship in China’s mountains and explore the rural revitalization path. Based on the study of land use change and transition, we put forward the theoretical framework of landscape pattern transition, and establish the rural landscape pattern transformation model of mountain area in southwest China by use of high resolution remote sensing images and field investigation. The results show that: (1) The focus of landscape pattern transformation in the case region is mainly embodied in the reduction of cultivated land, the expansion of orchard and the restoration of woodland. There are obvious differences in landscape pattern transition among different terrain areas in the case region. (2) From 2000 to 2018, the landscape types in the valleys of the study area were gradually diversified, there was a concentration of intensive land use types, and the landscape types in mountainous and hilly area were gradually simplified, and forest land was restored. (3) On the whole, the landscape pattern of the study area has changed from production-oriented landscape pattern to eco-economic landscape pattern and eco-regulatory landscape pattern. The results of case study show that the rural landscape pattern in the mountainous areas of Southwest China has undergone a transformation under the background of land use transformation, which has its own particularity, and verifies the theoretical hypothesis proposed in this paper, so it is necessary to conduct a systematic and in-depth study on this. The theories and methods of this paper are helpful to understand the process of landscape pattern transition in mountainous areas, and provide reference value for the rational use of land resources, ecological management and rural revitalization in similar mountainous areas.
