Traditional agroecosystem transition in mountainous area of Three Gorges Reservoir Area

Abstract: The Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) is typical of an ecologically vulnerable area, comprised of rural and mountainous areas, and with high immigration. Because of its economic and ecologic importance, studying the traditional agroecosystem changes in the TGRA is key to rural development and revitalization. In this study, we apply a framework of theoretical analysis, empirical study, and trend prediction to the Caotangxi River watershed within the TGRA. Using QuickBird high-resolution remote sensing images f… Show more

“…Thus, a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the southwest region with widespread cultivated land is of practical significance to China's mountain agricultural development and rural revitalization. The southwest mountainous area is an ecological barrier, climate-sensitive, and ecologically fragile area (Liang, Li, Shao, & Ran, 2020). Moreover, it is also the critical implementation location for many national policies, such as the Western Development Strategy and the Grain for Green Programme.…”

“…At the present stage (after 2010), forests form the main landscape type of the watershed. As a result of China’s policies of “ecological civilization construction” and targeted poverty alleviation, farmers earn income by transforming their agricultural production methods to achieve unity of economic and ecological benefits 69 . The ecological security situation of the landscape shows a favorable development trend.…”

“…Mountain farmers change the planting direction or leave the slope farmland uncultivated, which has transformed agricultural production methods and land use patterns (Figure 1). At present, the relationship between man and land in the mountainous areas of southwest China has gradually shifted from the traditional agricultural system to the non-agricultural and new agricultural systems, and the landscape pattern has also changed from the traditional single agricultural landscape to an ecological economic landscape (Liang et al 2020).…”
