The Port del Comte Massif (SE, Pyrenees) contains one of the most important vulnerable and strategic karst aquifers for supplying freshwater to the city of Barcelona (Spain). It is a fragile system, whose possible environmental impact is highly conditioned by land use. To improve the hydrogeological knowledge of the system, between September 2013 and October 2015, a detailed fieldwork was carried out for the revision of the geological model, the inventory of water points, and the in situ physico-chemical characterization on major elements and isotopes of up to a total of 43 springs, as well as precipitation water. This paper focuses on the characterization of the geochemical processes that allow explanation of the observed chemical variability of groundwater drained by the pristine aquifer system to determine the origin of salinity. The results show that the main process is the dissolution of calcite and dolomite, followed by gypsum and halite, and a minor cation exchange-like process. Sulfur and oxygen isotopes from dissolved sulfate in the studied springs point out a geogenic origin related to the dissolution of gypsum from Triassic and Tertiary materials, and that the contribution from anthropogenic sources, like fertilizers, is lower. Nitrate in groundwater is not an important issue, with a few localized cases related with agricultural activities. The multidisciplinary approach has allowed the development of a consistent hydrogeological conceptual model of the functioning of the aquifer system, which can be replicated in other places to understand the geogenic character of the hydrogeochemistry.

Este trabalho analisa o estado atual do conhecimento sobre o uso de isótopos estáveis (15N e 18O) na identificação de fontes de nitrato e os processos que controlam o transporte e transformação das espécies nitrogenadas em aquíferos situados em áreas urbanas e periurbanas na América Latina. Ao longo desse artigo, apresentam-se: (i) as principais reações e processos que controlam o nitrogênio dentro do ciclo; (ii) as fon-tes de contaminação de nitrato nas águas subterrâneas; (iii) as composições isotópicas de 15NNO3 e 18ONO3 de acordo com as fontes e fatores que levam a seu fracionamento; (iv) o uso combinado de outros traçadores (Cl-, 11B, 34S, 18OSO4) com os isótopos 15NNO3 e 18ONO3 em estudos de contaminação; e (v) estudos de caso na América Latina que empregam isótopos ambientais em aquíferos urbanos. Embora existam muitos dados acerca da composição isotópica de nitrato em águas subterrâneas, estes restringem-se a regiões situadas na Europa, América do Norte, Ásia e Oceania, constatando-se uma latente lacuna de dados no cenário latino-americano. Dessa forma, mais estudos são necessários concentrando-se no uso de modelos estáveis de mistura de isótopos e na melhoria da compreensão sobre o fracionamento isotópico mediante realização de ex-perimentos laboratoriais e de campo em áreas urbanas na América Latina.

The identification of groundwater chemical characteristics and the controlling factors is of major concern in water environment studies. In this study, we identified the groundwater chemical characteristics, evolution laws and main control factors in a region severely affected by human activities using hydrochemical and multivariate statistical techniques. The results showed that the concentrations of NO3− and TH were the primary pollution factors in the region with intensive human activity because of high concentration and over the standard rates. The major types of groundwater chemistry were HCO3·SO4–Ca and HCO3·SO4–Ca·Mg. The sulfate-type water was as high as 75.0%, 69.2% and 41.2% in the three hydrogeological units. In addition, there were Cl-type and Na-type waters, indicating that the groundwater in this area has been significantly affected by human activities. A principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that the three factors affecting groundwater hydrochemistry in the study area are domestic sewage and fertilizer, water–rock interactions and industrial wastewater. Therefore, we suggest that the government and water environment management departments should prevent the discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater without standardized treatment first in order to effectively prevent the further deterioration of groundwater quality in this area.
