Tracking Land Use Land Cover changes from 2000 to 2018 in a local area of East Java Province, Indonesia

Abstract: Land Use Land Cover (LULC) changes represent human influences on the natural ecosystem. This study aims to analyse such changes in the eastern part of East Java, a region of ± 3320.3 km2. The changes are analysed by comparing two editions of maps (the National Digital Map and Landsat-8). Five subsets are explored to understand the LULC changes caused by the development of: transportation infrastructure; industrial sites; the agricultural sector; tourism; urbanisation; and sub-urbanisation. Regional development… Show more

“…At the same time, East Java has challenges in maintaining rice production due to massive changes in rice field land cover. [16] argues that the growth of infrastructure, industry, and population growth is a trigger for the conversion of agricultural land into developed land that will threaten rice production. Over time, the carrying capacity of agricultural land in East Java Province is decreasing.…”

“…In contrast, built-up areas and agriculture are experiencing a rapid increase. Continuous conversion of forest cover will reduce the services of environmental ecosystems that are critical to the sustainability of human life and nature (Indarto & Hakim, 2021;Zbierska, 2022). These LULC changes are dynamic and non-linear, which can be seen based on the changes that occur in each decade.…”

“…Ketiga wilayah tersebut memiliki tantangan dalam mempertahankan produksi padi, hal ini dikarenakan perubahan tutupan lahan sawah. Pertumbuhan infrastruktur, industri serta pertumbuhan penduduk menjadi pemicu konversi lahan pertanian menjadi lahan terbangun yang akan mengancam produksi padi (Putri, 2015;Indarto & Hakim, 2021).…”
