Toxicological Findings of Self-Poisoning Suicidal Deaths: A Systematic Review by Countries

Abstract: The use of illicit and non-illicit substances is widespread in suicides. The toxicological data may help in understanding the mechanism of death. This systematic review aimed to analyze autopsies related to suicides by consuming poison, focusing on the correlation between substance use and the country of origin to create an alarm bell to indicate that suicide maybe attempted and prevent it. The systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines, with the primary objective of identifying autopsi… Show more

“…The potential CNS-induced effects of ethanol and MPs may be underestimated, at least in men. Although more information (and research) is needed, the possibility that legal blood ethanol limits set by legislation (for vehicle drivers, for example) may not be adequate in the case of men on MPs treatment is a matter of great concern given the widespread use of psychotropics, ethanol, and MPs in Western countries, especially in higher-income countries where the increasing use of BZDs and ADPs is particularly pronounced, even as a mode of suicide or self-poisoning [ 42 , 43 ]. Community-based studies are needed to assess the pharmacological, toxicological, or forensic implications of potential alcohol–drug interactions.…”

“…This literature review highlights the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach in cases of neonatal opioid intoxication. Cooperation between different professional figures is, in fact, crucial to substantially impacting the critical public health issue confronting our vulnerable population [ 1 , 103 , 104 , 105 ]. The gynecologist has the role of following the regular course of pregnancy, identifying the risk conditions, and promoting the well-being of the fetus and mother.…”

“…For example, people may turn to substances or behaviors such as drugs, smoking, alcohol, gambling, or internet use as a way to cope with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or stress. However, addiction can also contribute to, or exacerbate, mental health problems, as the use of substances or engagement in certain behaviors can have negative impacts on mental well-being [ 3 ]. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that cigarette smoking results in more than 480,000 deaths annually in the United States, with over 40,000 of these deaths attributed to second-hand smoke exposure.…”
