Coronary stents have saved millions of lives in the last three decades by treating atherosclerosis especially, by preventing plaque protrusion and subsequent aneurysms. They attenuate the vascular SMC proliferation and promote reconstruction of the endothelial bed to ensure superior revascularization. With the evolution of modern stent types, nanotechnology has become an integral part of stent technology. Nanocoating and nanosurface fabrication on metallic and polymeric stents have improved their drug loading capacity as well as other mechanical, physico‐chemical, and biological properties. Nanofeatures can mimic the natural nanofeatures of vascular tissue and control drug‐delivery. This review will highlight the role of nanotechnology in addressing the challenges of coronary stents and the recent advancements in the field of related medical devices. Different generations of stents carrying nanoparticle‐based formulations like liposomes, lipid‐polymer hybrid NPs, polymeric micelles, and dendrimers are discussed highlighting their roles in local drug delivery and anti‐restenotic properties. Drug nanoparticles like Paclitaxel embedded in metal stents are discussed as a feature of first‐generation drug‐eluting stents. Customized precision stents ensure safe delivery of nanoparticle‐mediated genes or concerted transfer of gene, drug, and/or bioactive molecules like antibodies, gene mimics via nanofabricated stents. Nanotechnology can aid such therapies for drug delivery successfully due to its easy scale‐up possibilities. The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic spreaded at the beginning of 2020, which brings lots of changes to our living habits The massive use of plastic products such as gloves, masks, protective clothing, and test kits put pressure on plastic waste treatment. There is not much research focused on plastic wastes that are generated during COVID and their treatment methods. This article discusses plastic waste in two aspects. The first is the damage of untreated plastic to the environment. The other is the analysis of current treatment methods for plastic and their advantage and disadvantages. The commonly used processes, including the incineration and landfilled processes, are discussed. Both incineration and landfill severely impact the environment and need to be transformed into a better process. Furthermore, new emerging technology such as pyrolysis and gasification can be developed into better thermal treatment methods because they have cleaner gas production and limit the production of toxic chemicals. Recycling is considered a favorable technique to treat plastic waste before COVID. However, during COVID, the preference for using plastic and the decrease in oil prices made this technology less competitive. Recommendations on the current plastic waste problem are made, including input gas cleaning systems such as carbon dioxide scrubbers, regulation of disposal of plastic, scale-up of pyrolysis and gasification process, and promoting the usage of biodegradable plastic.

Hybrid Nanoparticles of Citrate-Coated Manganese Ferrite and Gold Nanorods in Magneto-Optical Imaging and Thermal Therapy

The development of nanomaterials has drawn considerable attention in nanomedicine to advance cancer diagnosis and treatment over the last decades. Gold nanorods (GNRs) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been known as commonly used nanostructures in biomedical applications due to their attractive optical properties and superparamagnetic (SP) behaviors, respectively. In this study, we proposed a simple combination of plasmonic and SP properties into hybrid NPs of citrate-coated manganese ferrite (Ci-MnFe2O4) and cetyltrimethylammonium-bromide-coated GNRs (CTAB-GNRs). In this regard, two different samples were prepared: the first was composed of Ci-MnFe2O4 (0.4 wt%), and the second contained hybrid NPs of Ci-MnFe2O4 (0.4 wt%) and CTAB-GNRs (0.04 wt%). Characterization measurements such as UV-Visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed electrostatic interactions caused by the opposing surface charges of hybrid NPs, which resulted in the formation of small nanoclusters. The performance of the two samples was investigated using magneto-motive ultrasound imaging (MMUS). The sample containing Ci-MnFe2O4_CTAB-GNRs demonstrated a displacement nearly two-fold greater than just using Ci-MnFe2O4; therefore, enhancing MMUS image contrast. Furthermore, the preliminary potential of these hybrid NPs was also examined in magnetic hyperthermia (MH) and photoacoustic imaging (PAI) modalities. Lastly, these hybrid NPs demonstrated high stability and an absence of aggregation in water and PBS medium. Thus, Ci-MnFe2O4_CTAB-GNRs hybrid NPs can be considered as a potential contrast agent in MMUS and PAI and a heat generator in MH.
