This study investigated the biosorption efficiency of sodium hydroxide modified African Border tree (SMABT) bark powder on Safranin O, a cationic dye. The SMABT was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). As the initial dye concentration increased, the amount of Safranin O removed increased. The kinetic studies were described by pseudo first order and pseudo second order. The pseudo second order fitted very well into the kinetic experimental data. Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models were employed to describe the adsorption of Safranin O to SMABT and also to evaluate the isotherm constants. Langmuir model was the best of the four to excellently fit into the experimental data. The maximum uptake capacity of SMABT for Safranin O dye was 90.9 mg/g.

Este trabajo muestra la utilización de la cascarilla de arroz para la remoción del colorante catiónico azul de metileno bajo sistema continuo. Un diseño factorial 23, con puntos centrales y distribución aleatoria, fue implementado para evaluar la correlación de los factores experimentales en el proceso de adsorción. Las variables consideradas fueron pH, tamaño de partícula, presencia salina, velocidad de entrada, concentración inicial del colorante y altura de columna. Las muestras fueron analizadas a intervalos definidos de tiempo. La cantidad del colorante removido fue cuantificado por medio de espectroscopia Ultravioleta - Visible. Los modelos de Adams-Bohart, Thomas y BDST (Bed-depht/service time analysis) fueron utilizados para predecir las curvas de ruptura usando regresión no lineal y establecer los parámetros característicos del proceso. Se encontró que la transferencia de colorante al material adsorbente se favorece a pH básico, menor tamaño de partícula, flujo y concentración baja y mayor altura. El diseño de experimentos estableció que la concentración inicial de colorante y la altura del lecho fueron los factores más significativos. Con respecto a los modelos, el de Thomas presentó el mejor ajuste para la descripción de las curvas de ruptura a las condiciones experimentales y el de Adams-Bohart resultó adecuado para el comportamiento dinámico limitado a la parte inicial. Finalmente, el modelo BDST mostró una buena correlación y permitió establecer que la altura es determinante para el escalado del proceso.

Three binary dye mixtures prepared from the basic textile dyes Astrazon Blue FGRL (AB), Astrazon Red GTLN (AR), and Astrazon Golden Yellow GL-E (AY), were employed to demonstrate two different mixture characteristics. The first type of mixture (AB + AY) was the case where the optical absorbance spectra of the dye mixtures exhibited double peaks. Each peak occurred at the same wavelength as the single dye and the area under each light absorbance curve varied with the concentration of the dye in the solution. The second type was the case of the other two mixture combinations (AR + AY and AB + AR) whose spectra exhibited a single peak. In this case, shifts of the spectral peaks were observed as the composition of the mixture changed, and the area beneath the light absorbance curve corresponded to the quantity of the dyes in the mixture. With these techniques, it was possible to determine the quantity of each individual dye component in the binary dye mixture. The application of these techniques was demonstrated through estimation of the amount of dye adsorbed from simulated dye wastewater by dried biomass of Caulerpa lentillifera.
