Toxicity of insecticides used in the Brazilian melon crop to the honey bee Apis mellifera under laboratory conditions

Abstract: International audienceThis study aimed at evaluating the toxicity of insecticides used in melon crop (Cucumis melo L.) on adults of Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) under laboratory conditions. Three ways of exposure were used: direct spraying, feeding with insecticide contaminated diet, and contact with sprayed leaves. Bees were exposed to the insecticides abamectin, acetamiprid, cartap chloride, chlorfenapyr, cyromazin, deltamethrin, thiamethoxam, flufenoxuron, and pyriproxyfen at the highest dosages … Show more

“…The use of these insecticides in bee-attracting flowering crops is growing worldwide (Köhler and Triebskorn 2013), and the fact that their neurotoxic activity may affect pollinators justifies the increasing number of studies that seek to fill these gaps in knowledge (Gill et al 2012;Arena and Sgolastra 2014;Costa et al 2014;Fairbrother et al 2014;Feltham et al 2014). Neonicotinoids can be sprayed, applied to the soil or applied as a seed coating (Blacquiere et al 2012).…”

“…Most studies on the effects of pesticides on bees have evaluated the adult stage (Moraes et al 2000), mainly using the species Apis mellifera as a study model (Cresswell 2011;Costa et al 2014;Fairbrother et al 2014). Studies on the exposure of bees during the larval stage through in vitro rearing tests also focus on this species (Aupinel et al 2007;Hendriksma et al 2011;Wilkins et al 2013;Tavares et al 2015).…”

“…toxicity to A. mellifera and T. hyalinata. Chemical and biological control of pests require selective products for integrated pest management programs and insecticides should not impact pollinator insects, which are indispensable for the propagation of many cultivated and native plants 2,10,11 . The botanical product toxicity to insects such as natural enemies and pollinators should be evaluated due to the demand for organic food 29,30 .…”

“…O flufenoxurom é um agrotóxico de alta toxicidade para humanos (JEONG et al, 2014;WOO;LIM, 2015) e tem sido implicado também na toxicidade sobre as abelhas (COSTA et al, 2014). Foram publicados poucos trabalhos a respeito de sua degradação no ambiente e quais produtos de transformação são gerados (KAMEL et al, 2007;MAILLARD et al, 2011).…”
