Toxicity of 1,8-cineole towards three species of stored product coleopterans

Abstract: 1,8-cineole, one of the components of the essential oil of Artemisia annwa, was evaluated for repellency and toxicity against three stored product coleopterans-Callosobruchus maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), Rhyzopertha dominica F. (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae) and Sitophilns oryzae L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). It was found to be moderately repellent to all three species, with a mean repellency in the range of 65-74% at the highest dose tested (4.0 |al/ml) within lh. A contact toxicity assay revealed that… Show more

“…The fumigant activity of some essential oils from the Artemisia species have been evaluated against a number of stored product insects. Fumigant toxicity of essential oils has been reported from A. annua against S. oryzae (Aggarwal et al 2001), and A. aucheri oil showed fumigant properties on stored insect (Shakarami et al 2004). Fumigant properties of A. sieberi oil on S. oryzae and T. castaneum were also shown (Negahban et al 2006(Negahban et al , 2007.…”

“…The essential oil of Artemisia judaica L. has been demonstrated to possess insecticidal activity and repellence against several insects, such as Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab. ) and Sitophilus oryzae L. (Aggarwal et al 2001;Abd-Elhady 2012). Excessive use of chemical insecticides adversely affects the environment and human health.…”

“…In addition, the fumigant activity of some EOs from Artemisia species has been evaluated against a number of stored product insects. Fumigant toxicity of the essential oils has been reported for A. annua against Sitophilus oryzae (Aggarwal et al 2001), for Artemisia tridentata against some stored grain insects (Dunkel and Sears 1998). Artemisia aucheri Boiss oil also had fumigant toxicity to stored product pests (Shakarami et al 2004), and Artemisia sieberi oil to S. oryzae and T. castaneum (Negahban et al 2006a, b).…”
