Effect of Artemisia annua L. essential oil on toxicity, enzyme activities, and energy reserves of cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract: Abstract:The essential oil of Artemisia annua L., a weed collected from northern Iran, was studied for its toxicity and physiological aspects on 4th instar larva of the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera Hübner in controlled conditions (26±1°C, 65±10% RH and 16 L :: 8 D h). The artificial diet was used as a medium for investigating the toxicity and the effect of LC 10 , LC 30 , LC 50 , and LC 90 on the feeding efficiency of 4th instar larva. The essential oil in doses of LC 10 , LC 30 , LC 50 , and LC 90 wer… Show more

“…Our observation about inhibition of neurotransmitter enzyme AChE and detoxification enzyme GST by thymol in bean weevil females and males agrees with findings of other studies on physiological mechanisms of monoterpenes and essential oils toxicity ( Mojarab-Mahboubkar et al, 2015 ; Liao et al, 2016 , 2017 ; Agliassa and Maffei, 2018 ; Yang et al, 2018 ; Chen et al, 2021 ; Fouad and Abotaleb, 2021 ). Inhibition of AChE leads to accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve synapses, and thus permanent conduction of nerve impulses, ataxia, convulsions and death ( Rattan, 2010 ).…”

“…The elevation in GST enzyme activity was recorded in the 5 th instar larvae; a more tolerant stage compared to the 3 rd one, the latter expressed a decrease in enzyme activity emphasizing the possible role of GST in essential oil detoxification. In accordance to our findings, GST enzyme activity decreased in the cotton bollworm "H. armigera" treated with LC 50 of Artemisia annua essential oil [38] . S. littoralis treatment with camphor oil also led to modulation of physiological response including the activity of lipase, α-amylase, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzymes [27] .…”

“…Reduction in food utilization efficiency by botanical treatments points to their chronic toxicity which forces larvae to reallocate energy resources from growth to defense. Depletion of metabolites and adaptive increase in antioxidative and detoxification enzymes have been described in pest insects exposed to EOs [ 114 , 122 , 123 , 124 , 125 , 126 ] and azadirachtin [ 127 , 128 ]. Similar results were obtained in studies dealing with the impact of Apiaceae EOs on insect pests [ 45 , 113 , 129 , 130 , 131 ].…”
