Toxicity assessment of Hypericum olympicum subsp. olympicum L. on human lymphocytes and breast cancer cell lines

Abstract: There is a limited number of studies about the constituents of Hypericum olympicum subsp. olympicum and its genotoxic and cytotoxic potency. We examined the possible antigenotoxic/genotoxic properties of methanolic extract of H. olympicum subsp. olympicum (HOE) on human lymphocytes by employing sister chromatid exchange, micronucleus and comet assay and analyzed its chemical composition by GCxGC-TOF/MS. The anti-growth activity against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines was assessed by using the ATP viability ass… Show more

“…According to the results, the micronucleus concentration (MN ‰) observed in negative control was 15.08 ± 0.45‰ (Table 1), which is compatible with some of the findings given in the literature. For example, Ari et al found the MN ‰ of negative control to be 13.10‰, 22 Balikci et al found the MN ‰ of solvent control to be 24.50 ‰, 58 and Cobanoglu et al found the MN ‰ of negative control to be 20.10‰. 59 It is also shown in Table 1 that the lymphocyte cultures treated with H 2 O 2 had 2.65-fold higher MN ‰ than the negative control (P < 0.05).…”

“…There is little information regarding the biological properties of heptacosane, except those that report actions referable to phytocomplexes, for which it is one of the major constituents [ 110 , 111 , 112 , 113 ]. Heptacosane is one of the major components (8%) of the Centaurea baseri essential oil, Köse et al have previously described its multiple activities, including its cytotoxic properties against MCF-7, PANC-1, A549, and C6 glioma cell lines [ 114 ].…”

“…olympicum and it has also given evidence about its cytotoxic activity on MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines [53]. Moreover, H. triquetrifolium methanol extract was shown to have a cytotoxic effect on different cell types including large cell lung carcinoma (COR-L23), hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep G2), renal adenocarcinoma (ACHN), amelanotic melanoma C32 cell lines [54].…”
